Address: O'Connell Bridge, Burgh Quay Dublin 2.
Messrs Maguire is the other Dublin Brewery, if the other two are Guinness and Porterhouse, but Maguires probably claim that the Porterhouse is the other Dublin Brewery.
We popped in for a quick drink after work and it turned out we had been there before for a quick breakfast, which wasn't all that memorable. Somehow when we were there before we failed to notice their own beers so I'd had a Guinness which was reasonable for Dublin (which is the same as an excellent Guinness anywhere else in the world). Quite how I could fail to notice they brewed their own is a mystery as they have brewing equipment on display in the front window ...
This time I had the Extra, darker than Guinness, with a darker head and a nice bitter aftertaste, you can really taste the toasted grain. It's lovely, any stout drinker should enjoy it.
My lovely companion tried their Rusty first, a sweet traditional Irish Red a perfect session beer for her but a little too sweet for my British Bitter trained palate.
The other we tried was Jul Ol. I was expecting a dark lager or a Danish style winter beer and asked whether it was one of those, the helpful barman suggested "something between a bitter and a lager" and seemed relieved when I said "So like a winter bock?". That's what it was, a nice and friendly winter bock, perfect for a cold February evening, but at 6% not really a session beer. They've other beers on draft including a Bavarian style Weiss which will be passing my lips in the near future.
Messrs Maguire is a lovely central, friendly brew pub and I recommend it to any of you. |
